The Hillsborough Elim Story
PDF Print E-mail

hill_story1The Hillsborough Elim Church began with about half-a-dozen families who for around ten years had been gathering for house meetings under the leadership of R.J. Robinson (Sen.) whose desire it was to see an Elim Church established in Hillsborough.

In early 1981 a Gospel Mission was conducted in a temporary wooden structure building supplied by Pastor Eric McComb (Superintent, Elim Churches, Ireland) on the site of the present Church. Following the mission a larger wooden structure building was erected and became the first home of the newly established Elim Church.
This part of the building continues to be used for the Busy Bees Playgroup, Sunday School and as Church Halls.

hill_story2The first Pastor was a local man Robert Robinson and before long Robert and the church leadership announced plans to erect a more permanent structure to facilitate the now growing fellowship and activities
On the 30th June 1984 the first phase of the worship centre was opened. The Church continued to grow and in May 1987 the second phase was completed. In 1988 the large sports hall was added to the complex and in that same year the very first Annual Hillsborough Bible Week was held and continues to be one of the largest Bible Weeks in the Province.

hill_story3Pastor Robert Robinson continued as Pastor until the early 90s when Pastor David Blake became the Churches second Pastor and served until May 2000. In October 2000 James (Jimmy) B.D. Ritchie was appointed and installed as Pastor. Church growth continued and improvements were made to the sports hall and a new youth lounge was added. In June 2004 Alistair J. Ritchie was appointed as Associate Pastor.

Right from the outset Hillsborough Elim has been known as a family Church and seeks to minister the life-changing gospel to the whole family.

At the beginning of August 2008 a major refurbishment of the Church's Worship Centre and office suite was carried out. On Saturday 21st February 2009 there was great celebration as the newly refurbished Centre was opened with a special weekend of services with guest speaker Rev. Nigel Tween (Elim Church's Training Director and Principal of Regents Theological College.)

Today the church continues to grow and is known for the relevant preaching and teaching of God’s Word and inspiring worship.
