Jesus said; “I have come that you may have life, and have it to the full ” (John 10 v 10) The whole purpose for Jesus coming to earth was that we might know His love, have a growing and continuing relationship with Him every day and receive His free gift of eternal life through His sacrifice on the cross and His resurrection.
The Bible, God’s Word to each one of us, outlines the steps that are necessary to take in order to become a Christian and receive His free gift of eternal life. They are as follows;
Step 1 Recognise – That you are a sinner. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3 v 23) Our sin has cut us off from God’s presence (Isaiah 59 v 2) and must be dealt with if we are to have fellowship with Him. Sin is basically rebellion against God and all of us are sinners by nature, practice and choice. We continually break God’s law and fall short of the standard that His law requires.
Step 2. Repent – Of your sin. “Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out” (Acts 3 19) Repent means to make a U turn. To acknowledge before God our sinful and wayward ways, and to turn to God in sorrow from our old lifestyle and walk in the opposite direction no longer living our own way but in God’s way.
Step 3. Receive – by faith God’s free gift of eternal life. “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved” (Acts 16 v 31) To believe, in the New Testament sense, is to put your whole trust in Jesus Christ alone for your salvation.
Step 4. Relay – Pass on the news to others that you have become a Christian. The Bible calls this confession. “That if you confess with your mouth, " Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10 v 9)
Here is a simple prayer that will help you as you come to the Lord;
Dear Lord, I have sinned against You and I am truly sorry. I confess that I have lived my life to please myself and have broken Your laws and offended You. Though I do not deserve Your love, I thank You that You love me and have demonstrated Your love by dying on the Cross to pay the price for my sin. I now turn from my sin and receive You as my Lord and Saviour. Please make me, by the power of Your Holy Spirit, into the kind of person You want me to be.
In Jesus Name – Amen.
